Reminder! Sinéad Gleeson & Chloë Ashby
Join us tomorrow night at Bàrd Books, Tuesday 25 March, 7pm – £10
Hello feminist friends,
This is a reminder that we are springing back into action at London’s coolest new independent bookshop — Bàrd Books in London’s Mile End — with two powerhouse authors, to explore art, feminism and the self:
Meet the Bàrd: Sinéad Gleeson & Chloë Ashby, with Feminist Book Society*
Bàrd Books, 341-343 Roman Rd, Bow, London E3 5QR (Mile End/Bethnal Green – next to Victoria Park)
Tuesday 25 March, 7pm, £10 – £5 of the ticket price is redeemable against a signed book!
We will discuss how these writers encounter visual art and use it to explore the depths of human nature; the realities and challenges inherent an artistic practice; and how these authors view themselves as artists.
Plus, as always, there will be an opportunity to bring your own questions!
*As you’ll see, this one-off event will just be hosted by Rosie, as Eli will not be able to join us this time – but she sends you all her love and can’t wait to be back speaking to authors and sparking the feminist debates we should be having now.
About the authors
Sinéad Gleeson’s debut novel Hagstone – now in paperback – is set on a wild and rugged island, home to and inspiration of artist Nell, whose work is rooted in landscape, folklore and the feminine; and refuge to the mysterious commune of women, the Iníons. Throughout her powerful 2019 essay collection Constellations: Reflections From Life, Sinéad also turns her restless eye outwards delving into work, art – and our very ways of seeing.
Chloë Ashby's latest novel Second Self follows Cathy, whose indecision over whether to have baby is set against her work as a conservator at the National Gallery; her previous novel Wet Paint explores grief and precariousness through life-model Eve. As well as her novels, she is the author of two excellent non-fiction books on art history: Look At This If You Love Great Art; and Colours of Art: The Story of Art in 80 Palettes, a Times best book of 2022.
About the bookshop
BÀRD BOOKS is more than just a bookshop. Alongside their carefully curated bookshelves, you can pop in for a coffee and pastry, freshly baked by the incredible Snapery East in London Fields. You can bring your laptop or old-fashioned notebook and get some work done in their quiet “pretty books” room at the back, or if the sun shines, feel inspired by a glass of something deliciously chilled in their haven of a garden. Or, join them in the evening when the lights dim for a hot chocolate, or even a bottle of wine with some bàr(d) snacks.
Check out their other events here.
Following our autumn announcement, we are still taking some time out, but will be slowly re-emerging this year with occasional events. We miss our feminist community and we will be putting more plans in place soon!
